Arts & Science Interviews Innis Alumnus Phil Howard
Innis alumnus Phil Howard was recently appointed as the director of the Oxford Internet Institute in the United Kingdom. Phil was interviewed by Arts & Science in regard to his research on the impact of information technology on society, economics and politics – particularly in the wake of the 2016 American presidential election. Much of Phil’s research examines the importance of information policy and the way technology can be used for social control through the manipulation of public opinion. He explains the significance of well structured information policy and its influence on democratic societies.
“I’m interested in demonstrating how nicely designed information infrastructure helps us understand social problems, deliberate well and put resources into solving those problems. Doing that, these days, often means showing how poor information policy, media regulation and technology standards get in the way of our democratic values.”
