USP alumna, Julia Lo on playing her part to build a “stronger, fairer, and more inclusive” Toronto
Julia Lo (HBA, Urban Studies, 2010) is the Senior Communications Officer for the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicating to unleashing the potential of the Greater Toronto region. Over the past 10 years, CivicAction has brought together senior executives and rising leaders to launch transformative initiatives, such as the Your32 regional transportation campaign, DiverseCity: The Greater Toronto Leadership Project, and Luminato, Toronto’s Festival of Arts and Creativity.
Julia completed an internship at CivicAction for INI437 (Experimental Learning), and was hired right after graduation. In her role as Senior Communications Officer, she provides corporate communications, partnership development, social media, and media relations support for the organization. Julia says that “the Urban Studies program in part inspired me to consider how I can contribute to a stronger, fairer, and more inclusive city.”
In addition to her work at CivicAction, Julia serves on the Board of Management for The 519 Church Street Community Centre, co-chairing the Strategic & Program Planning committee. In 2012, she helped review and recognize the best Ontario Public Service communications projects in media relations, event planning, and special achievement.
Julia says that her time in the Urban Studies Program helped her develop a deeper understanding of social and economic issues facing the Greater Toronto Area. “I see my role as something like a community curator – seeking to understand people, why they see the world through a particular lens, and connecting them to a new idea or set of facts that might influence their perspective. It heartens me when people feel informed and empowered to make a difference in their city.”
