Class of 1988 – BA, Innis
Richard Lautens graduated from Innis College with a degree in History and Political Science. He was very active in student government and newspapers and was named Graduating Athlete of the Year. Although he never lived in residence, he did have sleeping rights to the sofa at Vlad house. During his 5 years at the University of Toronto, he discovered photography. Working for campus newspapers and freelancing led to a stint as a photography summer student at the Toronto Star in 1987. Innis is also where Richard met his wife of 15 years, fellow Innisian Sirje Jarvel.
Richard has been a photographer with The Toronto Star for more than 19 years. As staff photographer, Richard travels the world covering sports, news, fashion and feature stories. Richard is also an instructor at Centennial College and curator of several photography exhibits. He continues to maintain a busy freelance photography business. His photographs have appeared on posters, magazines, books, exhibitions, CD covers and newspapers and have won local, national and international awards.
Much of Richard’s spare time is spent on school field trips, and he is known around his children’s school as ‘The Skippin’ DudeT’ for helping with the school’s skipping club. He lives in downtown Toronto with his wife, two children and two hairy new puppies.
