George Elliott Clarke Delivers the 2016 Harold Innis Lecture
November 9, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
The Harold Innis Foundation proudly welcomes Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate, GEORGE ELLIOTT CLARKE, to Innis College for the relaunching of the HAROLD INNIS LECTURES. The Lectures are an annual series of conversations that highlight individuals, whose work advances the discourse, and builds upon the legacy, of Canadian political economist, Harold Adams Innis. George Elliott Clarke is a celebrated author, poet, and academic. His vast intellectual breadth encompasses the intersections of Canadian cultural identity with communications technology and multiculturalism. The Harold Innis Foundation and Innis College are honoured to host Dr. Clarke on the evening of November 9th. We invite you to participate in the dialogue.
“Leonard Cohen’s Beautiful Losers, Fifty Years On:
Blasphemy as Treason, Passion as Revolution.”
Professor George Elliott Clarke will offer a reading of Beautiful Losers as a work that is erudite, witty, avant-garde, scatalogical, and bracingly iconoclastic in light of its appearance during three radical upheavels: Quebec’s Quiet Revolution, The Sexual Revolution, and The Counter-culture Movement. Professor Clarke will consider Cohen’s strategic use of “blasphemy” to contest political orthodoxies that constrain or could constrain possibilities for personal liberation and egalitarian social change.
