Let’s Talk Toronto
The Urban Studies Student Union (URSSU) hosted a panel event, Let’s Talk Toronto, on Monday, November 14th in Town Hall at Innis College. The event was designed as an open-ended debate surrounding a variety of issues in Toronto, with a focus on engaging U of T’s international student population in local issues.
The Panelists included: HAMUTAL DOTAN, the Editor-in-Chief of Torontoist, the award-winning blog, JONATHAN GOLDSBIE, Journalist, activist, published writer, and
JOHN CAMPEY, Executive of Social Planning Toronto. The discussion was moderated by URSSU member Rachel Lissner.
The discussion began with a focus on Toronto’s place within Canada, challenges that the city faces, and ways to drive civic engagement. Challenges that were acknowledged ranged from the place of the Chief planner within the city hierarchy, to voting on weekends or online. Discussion was lively, yet intimate, with lots of questions from the audience. The two-hour event wrapped up with speakers addressing the need for more civic engagement, especially from Toronto’s inner suburban neighborhoods. Many thanks go out the participating panelists, and the attendees for making this event one of URSSU’s biggest!
